Come as You Are (2011) Belgium

Three guys with one desire which is beyond their reach.

Adventure | Comedy | Drama

Original title:
Hats La Vista (Spanish)

Review:
It was like the British movie 'Third Star' where they go in search of peace but in this movie it is totally opposite. It centers around three friends Joseph, Phillip and Lars who are in the twenties. Joseph is a visually impaired, Phillip is paralyzed and Lars got a tumour. They are all common in something, like, they are still virgins. They are looking for their first sexual experience, so they plan all the way to tour Spain where the destiny for their desire is waiting for them. But what stand against them are their parents and of course the disease. How they overcome everything and reach their goal is what the rest of the movie gonna tell to us.

If you read the synopsis of the movie you come to know that the concept was not the first time you have heard. It is the common theme in Americans teen movies like 'Sex Drive' and 'The Inbetweeners'. But the thing was the main three characters were disabled and that makes the movie special. Because of the softness of the characters, the audience will easily approve the intense of storyline and saying 'let them have what they want'. Yeah, that makes I too want to be like one of them then I can be approved to have anything I want, hahaha.

I think the movie was good. It was a fun adventure simultaneously light emotional tale. All these three guys wanted was to have the fun like the normal people, before it become too late for them. There was also a fat woman in the story, called Claude and she was the van driver who takes them to the tour. Her role was obvious and supported well to the main characters. She was kinda reminded me Melissa McCarthy.

It was one of the best road movie. I thought I could see some beautiful places of Europe but the director had the different ideas. He exposed lots of character emotions than the places around them but still the beauty of Europe vastly visible. The tale leaves nothing for us to guess the end, as expected it ends in a usual style. So if you thought it would be a tearjerker's movie, it is not. The movie had many lines about adult stuffs, that makes it suitable for them only. It is one of the heartwarming comedy about disabled people and their desires like many movies we had seen.

Little Red Flowers (2006) China

The consequence of communism on the little children.

Comedy | Drama

Original title:
Kan Shang Gu Hen Mei (Mandarin)

Review:
People must understand something before complaining anything about the movie. Possibly the lifestyle and cultural differences makes audience to have the wrong opinion about it. That too the story sets in China in the 1940s, almost 60 years ago. There are lot be changed by now and all the above it a was based on the semi-autobiographical novel by a man who remembered his life in kindergarten.

The movie tells the tale of a 4 year-old boy Fang Qiangqiang. In the beginning of the story the Fang's father leaves him in a kindergarten boarding school. Where kids to be taught good behaviours like self dressing, bathing, feeding, playing and helping each others like all the basic knowledge. For a good behaviour student will get a red paper flower each day and also be taken away if they are not behaving. So our protagonist Fang struggles at the initial stage to adopt the new environment. Giving a best shot to get his first red flower which terribly ends. The struggle drags to days and weeks without making any progress. One day, frustrated teacher forces him to undress and dress again in front of the whole class but makes Fang turn into a different person. Fang was a unique visioned kid, needed to be specially taken care but for the common rule for all he becomes a degraded.

It had a bit strong nudity than usual in a children's movie. Yeah, that might upset some people especially the family audience. Even I was shocked to see the raw presentation, some scenes could adjusted with different camera angles. It makes me think like was China like this once? Initially I was hesitated to accept it as a good movie but later something changed my mind. There are many movies like 'City of Life and Death' and others which are based on the II world war which tells nothing but a truth one can hard to digest. The life in the firs half of the 20th century was difficult so no exception for this movie as well which happens in post-revolutionary China. Definitely the people who have no idea about communism will learn something from the movie.

There were not much dialogue in the movie. The camera angles were also good, kept under children's stature. I am a big fan of the children's movies and I liked 'Little Red Flowers' very much despite nudity. The main reason was it was someone's real story than some fictional one. But the ending was a bit disappointed, it won't denotes in which way it concludes. I am warning this movie is for a selected audience, you could be end in displeasure because of the presentation, not for the story or the cast.

Me and You (2012) Italy

A week that makes you reborn.

Drama

Original title:
Lo e Te (Italian)

Review:
From one of my favourite Italian director, Bernardo Bertolucci. Everyone must appreciate his passion towards film making. While lying in a wheelchair, he accomplished the desire of his fans than trying to do for fame or break the record. After a long gap, nearly a decade later he came up with this simple but wonderful heartwarming drama about a teenager boy. It was a great comeback for the southern living legend.

'Me and you' was based on a novel which centers around 15 year-old loner, Lorenzo. To escape the associate with others he fakes his ski trip and hid in his house's basement for a week long. Soon after his half sister, Olivia, finds out who is a junkie, later she joins him. They are mismatched half siblings who never met before. During the stay they come to know each other very well leaving all the family grudges away. The first step for Lorenzo to learn to mingle with others is with his half sister and for Olivia, her half brother helps to free from the drug addict. After a week they come into the real world like a newborn butterfly from the chrysalis leaving past behind.

It was a sweet little cast movie which most of the movie takes place in the basement. I did not get it why there's lots of dislikes of this movie. There are many things in the story to understand, you won't require a close observation to get it. I am totally surprised, is critics are that fool for not getting the movie right. Like I always say ignore the critics and decide yourself. For me it was a cute movie which made me to understand a slice of life.

Bernardo Bertolucci did all kinda experiment in his movie characters and relationship. When I saw this movie poster for the first time I thought it could be portrayal of some teenager's sexual experience like the movie 'The Reader'. But I was wrong, 'Me and you' went beyond I anticipated and became a meaningful tale of the two young people. I know the movie won't entirely satisfy for one because of a subject that won't explore in deeper, I mean in detail. But worth mentioning the performances by the lead two as well the direction of Bernardo Bertolucci  Next time we hope he will make two times better than this, maybe another masterpiece.

Losers' Club (2011) Turkey

Hello, beloved listeners of Kent.

Comedy | Drama | Music | Romance

Original title:
Kaybedenler Kulubu (Turkish)

Review:
Based on the true story of the two Turkish radio jockeys (RJs) from the 90s, who are the talk of the late night. It was more like a Turkish version of 'The Boat that Rocked' but the thing was the radio station and programme were legal. I found the movie was a little slow in pace but deals with an interesting thematic plot.

The movie tells the story of Kaan and Mete, the radio show hosts. The two ordinary guys with a boring daily livelihood suddenly become colourful once theirs late night radio programme called 'Loser's Club' instantly becomes a hit. They become the celebrities as well as threats from the religious people. One of them finds his dream girl. Whatsoever they are not ready to change themselves to the current situation. They want left alone like everybody else, so what happens to their fame is the ending part of the movie.

Both the lead actors were executed simple performances but looked so powerful. The lead lady, called Zeynep, was also a good and looking cute. Most of the movie shot at the night time, I mean almost, so the light was used very wisely. The movie was simple as its look and complicated to get at first glance. One of a fine Turkish drama I have seen, quite resembles the quality and style of the German movie 'The Lives of Others'.

Song for Marion (2013) England

Fulfilling your beloved one's last wish.

"Open your heart. Find your voice."

Review:
It was also called 'Unfinished Song', about the two aged couples who are opposite characters but strongly united by the one true mad love. Both are interested in different stuffs, one was keen to participate in a singing contest and another one was just want to hangout with his pals and play pokers. Most importantly they are not interfered into each others interest. But destiny diverts their path and how they react to it is the following story.

The movie was cute with all the old fellows. Each of them were very nice alongside lead two. Don't forget, Gemma Arterton's supporting role was one of a strong grip to the movie's theme. She was the music teacher in the story, and her parts were also equally valued to the lead two.

There were some similarities with 'Quartet'. But it was so pleasant and feel good kinda movie. The movie also had some of cool music tracks. The story leaves nothing you to predict except a little portion at the end. The end twist was also not a special but does a justice to the movies. In many parts of the movies, there are some humours which really brightens the viewers often. Just ignore what others say and sit back and enjoy the movie.

The History of Future Folk (2013) Hollywood

Defeat the aliens with the music.

Comedy | Music | Romance | Science Fiction

Review:
This is a charming little indie feature about the two human look like aliens from the planet Hondo. They sent on the mission to find an alternate home to quit from their dying planet. But soon they fall in love with the greatest human invention, music. They forget about what they have come and adopt the Earth's atmosphere and human life style.

Definitely a low budget movie and sometime scenes with no logic. A perfect entertainer to someone who familiar with a B movie. They used a minimal quantity of tools like cast, graphics and the locations including simple costumes but there were no limitation of the imagination. It is not suitable for who always look for a perfect sense, other than that it is very enjoyable.

The movie was short and sweet . No surprise twists, the end was very plain but somehow it satisfies. As I said 'The History of Future Folk' is not a crowd puller, there are few people who know well second stream movies will enjoy it.

Gravity 3D (2013) Hollywood

It's time to go home!

Drama | Science Fiction | Thriller

Tagline:
"Don't let go."

Review:
'Gravity', one of a best space movie ever produced. Remember I am not comparing it to any space travel and alien themes. Definitely it was this year's 'Life of Pi'. Easily one can put it into his/her's all time favourite list. There are very few breathtaking 3D movies I have seen in my life and it is one of them along side 'Avatar', 'Hugo', 'Life of Pi'. Probably you will miss something great if you miss this movie, especially in digital 3D. You will have whole life with you to see this movie at any time and day but watching it when it is served hot and spicy will be the best shot one can give. So all I can say is don't miss this movie at any cost.

Okay lets talk about the movie and its storyline. The story of this movie takes place approximately 600km above the Earth where astronauts sent to repair the Hubble space telescope. During the final spacewalk, Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) on her first space expedition accompanied by Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) gets a warn message from their mission control in Huston. As that destroyed Russian satellite's scattered fragments are approaching them at very speed. Soon after they loose contact from the control station in the Earth, now they have to abort the mission and reach the safe place. But it is too late for them and what comes after is the chain reaction of the destructed Russian satellite.

Sandra Bullock was very good as well looked so hot in off the astronaut costume. You know, there are no running, dancing or any kinda gun fights like that happen in space travel theme. As it is happening in the space everything are floating and drifting. So within that limited offer to perform, the actors from this movie did a wonderful job. George Clooney did not have much scope for his role, within his limited time span he was as usual very good.

It won't waste much time, within starting few minutes the visuals makes you to feel you are in the space. Since it takes place in space, we know the objects floats in zero gravity so there are many visual pop-ups. Most importantly the intense pop-ups are excluded like that happens in commercial movies, everything are looked very natural like that happens in the space. It was a great achievement in cinematic, to show the enormous space with most of them covered with dark background in 3D other than Earth's. Yes, with a dark background it is hard to see the depth of an object in 3D so the graphic designers did a wonderful job to make it work. In some of the scenes the camera view transforming into a character's view which were something I never seen before, surprisingly awesome.

It was a simple storied movie but a breathtaking stunts, we were expecting all these years for it without knowing. A little late but came at the right time when the graphics and 3D are beginning to boom the cinema world. As you see it was not a rocket science to understand the movie but of course it was a bit about rockets and stuffs. What I am saying is anyone can easily understand the movie, it was not that complicated at all. Even kids can enjoy it, only if they are okay with loneliness, distress kinda mild mind tortures.

This year's OSCAR buzz begins with this movie, what a way to begin. I will be very sad if this movie won't get at least a single golden trophy in an upcoming OSCAR ceremony. I think I can expect nominations in the category of visual effects, cinematography and best female lead for Sandra Bullock. As well there is a strong chance that this movie could get into the top 10 for the best motion picture nominee list. But still I don't how everything goes in the next couple of months because there are many great movies are in queue to hit the screen. Such OSCAR buzz movies are '12 years of Slave' and 'American Hustle'. I got a feeling that its big box office will impact a lot at the American Academy Awards. If everything I said happens, on that particular night I will have a little smile remembering this review I wrote.

As you see I might be a bit overwhelmed by a watch but I am sure this will be the best 90 minutes you will ever spend time for a movie in 2013. To encounter the real space atmosphere you must see the movie on a big screen as well in digital 3D. Hope you will enjoy it more than I did or anyone around you.
